In 2014,  we were told Lexi had a vision impairment called CVI (cortical vision impairment).  Essentially, this means that everything she sees is through a filter like Swiss cheese. Her doctor said she seems to also favor red and is able to focus on that so, “Wear things like red lipstick and red nail polish. It helps her to focus on you.” No truer words could have been said about her love for this crimson color. We knew she loved red. Being a huge Cleveland Indians (Guardians) fan & Ohio State Buckeye fan like her dad, she was already immersed in that color.
A few years later, her brother became a Marine. Already a huge lover of the anthem, Lexi no longer just “favored” red, she carried American flags with her everywhere to hand out to veterans that she would meet. Her brother’s service left an indelible impression on this child. She found her own way to serve.  
The little girl who loved red, embraced the very symbol of that color through one of her most coveted items: the red, white, and blue American flag. Every single day it became her passion to hand out those flags to veterans, and she has given away thousands of them. 

One that got it very wrong was the specialist who challenged us that she could see at all. We didn’t believe it then and we surely don’t believe it now. Tell that to the thousands of veterans whose face she has searched in order to share a smile with them.
